Who is your favorite musician who never had a solo project?
A lot of the greatest musicians are so good that they are able to have a successful solo career. Who is our favorite musician that never had that?
I really liked Randy Rhoads (of early Quiet Riot and Ozzy Osbourne). I think I read once that he was planning on releasing a more Classically-influenced solo record, but unfortunately he passed before he was able to release anything of the sort. What a guy.

Tosin Abasi (of Animals as Leaders and T.R.A.M.) also comes to mind. My favorite thing about him is that he isn't full of himself like a lot of virtuoso guitarists. He could have very easily become like every other shred guitarist who has an average bassist and drummer. For example, if you see Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen, or another similar guitarist, it's pretty much a one-man show and the other band members don't dare step on the guitarist's lines. But Tosin Abasi found instrumentalists on par with his ability and plays in a band that features all members. It makes it so much more interesting to listen to, it's so good.

I agree, I would have loved to hear a Randy Rhoads solo project.
I would have also liked to here a Jeff Hanneman solo project. He started a punk band while with Slayer at one point but I think only a few songs came out of it. It would have been very interesting to see what he could have done outside of Slayer.
Also Cliff Burton, he too was very into punk and would have probably made some good solo work outside of Metallica.

Ooh, good question!
Off the top of my head, I'd say the late Tony Thompson. Thompson was one of the best drummers and sessions-men in rock and disco for a lot of years. He's probably most remembered for his work with the Power Station and Chic, but was a go-to guy for Robert Palmer and host of other acts. To my knowledge, he never had a solo project or his own band.

Ryan Martinie: Mudvayne
IMO he's the most talented member of Mudvayne thanks to his awesome basslines. After hearing Evan Brewer's debut album, I'm curious if Martinie would do a solo bass album himself.

George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher, of Cannibal Corpse.
His vocals just wouldn't go right with anything but the rest of the band's sound.
