what might be wrong with my house's air conditioning?
I can't just leave the thermostat alone and let it regulate the houses air temperature, because when I try that it just stays on continuously. At first, I thought that the thermostat had failed, so I replaced it with a new one of the same model, and still had the same problem. I suspect the black control box (don't know it's exact name) in the central air unit itself, but I don't want to replace it without a little input.
Shroud, the unit says on constantly, even when the temperature inside the house is 20 deg or more cooler than the thermostat setting.
And Calvin, I did all that this previous May.

It sounds like you have short in somewhere between thermostat and indoor unit (furnace or air handler).
Did your AC stop when removing the thermostat? Or, you turned off before replacing thermostat (so you do not know)?
You can try this.
1. Turn off the power to the system
2. Remove the thermostat
3. Make sure any wire is shorting each other (thermostat side)
4. Turn on the power to the system
5. Wait for about 5min
If the system starts without thermostat then there is a short or control board has some issue. May be mouse has chewed the wires.

is your house cooling down to the temp you want
the first thing you need to do is watch the temp not listen to the blower or compressor
if you set it at 78 it should drop the temp 1 or 2 degrees lower then shut off
maybe you AC is having a hard time getting the temp down - it might need a coolant recharge
find out what the temp is in your house set you thermostat higher - meaning the AC is running the house temp is 80 set the thermostat to 83 the AC should soon shut off
also check your setting I can keep the fans going after the AC shuts off - it sounds about the same but it is just moving the air around

When the compressor outside is blowing air upward, you should feel hot air blowing against your hand. If the air is not hot, look at the radiator on sides of unit. If there is a cotton wood tree near by, the unit takes air in through the sides and blows out the top. It is like a vacuum cleaner. If the radiator is clogged up. the compressor cannot exp ell the heat.
If that is not the problem, the freon may be low. You will need a technician to charge it.
Source(s): If the radiator is plugged up, turn the power off at the breaker box, or at the disconnect box near the unit. Turn the thermostat to off. Now you may use a garden hose to spray the radiator from the top grill of the compressor. That should clean the radiator. You also should replace the air filter inside the furnace return air. That filter operates like a vacuum cleaner also. - 8 years ago
Also look at the location of your thermostat. If it has worked well before, then see if anything has changed. It reads the temp only where you installed it. If its in the sun, it will read hotter than the rest of the house & continue to run thinking that its reading the whole house.
If a curtain is now letting in more light or partly covering it. This will make a difference in how it reads.
