Got in an accident two weeks after i got my license?

I was sitting at a red light when a guy came up and hit me from behind. He was looking down because he was trying to pick something up and stopped too late. I wasn't at fault for the accident. I pulled over to a sears near by. I got his name, phone number and license plate number (I wasn't sure what else I needed and my parents weren't answering their cellphones so I decided that that should be enough info. So no insurance info or pictures.) My bumper had a few scratches and a small dent so I didn't think it was necessary to call the police or anything. We are thinking of going to police station and reporting the accident. If we do, will I get points on my license? Will it get revoked? And will our insurance rates go up?

We tried calling the guy, but he would not give any insurance information, therefore assuming he has none.

Also, I'm about 17.5 year old, no prior accidents or issues.

Note: I didn't make any sudden stops, I'd been sitting at the light for at least 20 - 60 seconds before he hit me. There were also cars in front of me so moving forward was not much of an option, even if I had seen him coming.

You should have gotten a look at his drivers license for his state-issued number.

Ideally, if the other person is seriously at fault, call the police. The police will take information from all parties involved. People who don't have insurance don't like this when it happens.

Now, my automobile has been hit like yours was - last month, in fact - and I too have bumped a vehicle in front of me. None of use involved even bothered to get information from each other as there was no damage.

Your state might request you to submit accident reports to the state's motor vehicle department. That's where you can write your story with the details.

I found this on the State of New York Department of Motor Vehicles website.

    http://dmv.ny.gov/accident.htm

I could not find any webpage like that one for the State of Texas DMV website, but as I have filled out two crash reports long ago, I know the State of Texas has similar requirements.

Go to the police department, you should find the paper reports you need to fill out.

And ask them for the webpages so you will be able to quickly find this information in the future.

The accident should be reported to the police, along with the guys phone number. You should also let the police know the man refused to give insurance information. You will not get any points on your license for reporting the accident because you were not at fault. When you are hit from behind it is automatically the other persons fault, plus with guy not co-operating it looks like he has something to hide.

You should notify your insurance company but your rates will not go up unless you claim the damage to be repaired. The reason for notifying your insurance is so there is a record of you notifying them in case some where down the line some one tries to make a false claim against your insurance and uses the previous damage to your car as proof you were involved in an accident with them, I know sounds silly and unbelievable but it happens.

If you want the car repaired, report it to your insurance co and make a police report.

If you are covered with collision insurance, they will cover the cost of the repair less any deductible which you will have to pay. Your insurance company will go after the other guy to get their money back either from him or his insurance company.

You wont get points wasnt your fault and you didnt violate any law.

If you don't want the car fixed, just drop the whole thing.
