I have recently purchased an ex school computer?

I have purchased an ex school Dell Vostro laptop, (legally!!) and have tried fitting a new HD and load Windows 8. It loads ok, but when I try to run it it starts to load then stops and won't complete. can.t find anything in bios to change. Any ideas?

If it had XP on it, there is no way it could run W 8..

The internal hardware is way out of date and wouldn't have the power to run W 8.

Vista or possibly W 7 is your only bet. Even then there are minimum specs

to run either of those OS.

Windows 8 requires a 1GHz processor and 1GB of RAM

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/syste...

There is no indication just which version of Vostro is being used so it cannot be stated that it is not powerful enough.

There are not enough details to pin down the problem. At what point does it fail? Is it at the same point every time? Is there any message displayed?

have a look at what OS was installed on it if its still got the microsoft authentication sticker

Then try to find a bootable cd of that OS (you might be able to download 1 off the internet) and install it

You should be able to authenticate this with the key from the microsoft label

(if you cant then ring microsoft and tell them you have just purchased the pc with a wiped drive and want to re-install the OS)

Maybe it lacks power and can't run W8. Compare the CPU and the RAM to what is required to run W8. Maybe it will run XP?
