Writer's Question?
This question seems intrusive to me to be asking, but I am writing a story that includes two gay characters, so it would help me to know.
How do two gay men decide which of them will be the top and the bottom? Do you just instinctively know, or do you need to specifically ask? Do some gay couples ever switch roles if they feel like doing so?
I hope I haven't offended anyone, but I am too shy to ask my gay friends about this, for fear of intruding on their private lives.

Not offensive at all. Usually, I think it is a good idea to talk before to see what the other guy likes. I am versatile, which means I like to do both in an evening. However, some days I'm in a bottom mood, and some days in a top mood. But, it is wise to communicate this before hopping into bed. Some guys do not even want anal sex and are totally satisfied with oral.

Two guys just know that. When I see a man I like the look of, I at once know whether I want to be on top or not. It is usually "not," but not always. Some guys just radiate "top." Pheromones have a lot to do with it, just as they do in hetero- attraction. Gays appear to be body-obsessed because men are more visually motivated than women.

Well, most of us I hope don't hop in bed with any other gay guy with out knowing them first, so I don't think for that reason it's really discussed or even thought about. Not to me all least, I have a relationship with a man before a have sex with him, and therefore I know, but I guess that someone who would go to a bar and pick up guys, would have to ask, unless they were confident in their gaydar(which I'm not) anyways, I've always been set up with guys by my friends so they knew who to set me up with. Hope this helps.

I personally asked my boyfriend what roles we would assume and what he preferred. I was the bottom and he was the top so it was all good for us.
