Country songs that "push the boundaries"?

Just like, country songs that talk about stuff we don't hear all that often in country music - like Ashley Monroe's "Weed Instead of Roses," or even Christian Kane's "Making Circles" (which uses the 'f word').

Anybody know any good ones? :D

Hi, The type of country music your looking for is rampant in the alternative/underground country music scene, which also tends to sound like the older country music but with a kick. Hank III is kind of the unofficial leader of the underground country scene. You can also find boundary pushing in hick-hop or country rap also. Here are some of my favorites. Links below.

You can find more artists like below by searching for alternative, americana, outlaw country, rockabilly/psychobilly, folk, hick-hop, and stuff like that on sites like youtube, reverbnation, lastfm, and pandora radio. This is by no means a complete list.

Hank III, Joey Allcorn, Bob Wayne & The Outlaw Carnies, Honky Tonk Hustlas, Tonya Watts, Little Lisa Dixie, Dale Watson, Steve Earle, Pistol Annies, Rachel Brooke, Jackson Taylor & The Sinners, Hellbound Glory, David Allan Coe, Lydia Loveless, Joe Buck Yourself, Ghoultown, Shooter Jennings, Scott H. Biram, Roger Alan Wade, Tanner Flowers (aka: Tanner Flowers on youtube), Big Smo, The Moonshine Bandits, Colt Ford, Molly Gene One Whoman Band

    1. Big Smo - Kickin' It In Tennessee (Official video is on youtube, country rap)

    2. Little Lisa Dixie - I'll Go With You, Bad Thang, Bonnie And Clyde, Stoned Again,

    3. Pistol Annies - Takin' Pills, Family Feud, Hush Hush, Hell On Heels (Miranda Lambert's side band project.)

    4. Bob Wayne - Driven By Demons, Lyza, All My Friends, Drug Runner, Mack, Til The Wheels Fall Off (Driven By Demons official video is on youtube)

    5. Joey Allcorn - I Just Don't Know, Graveyard Bound

    6. Rachel Brooke - Bottle Tippin' Blues

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_spsq2PM7U (Little Lisa Dixie - I'll Go With You explicit) True outlaw country song here! Check out her 2011 album, a new album is coming soon. To me she is the new queen of outlaw country.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDzyGXprgZY (Hellbound Glory - Bastard Child official video)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2N-UFoIraHY (Jackson Taylor & The Sinners - Country Song official video explicit) Song is mainly dissing the Opry for throwing out Hank Williams Sr. & Johnny Cash.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_B1tZ7Nqqig (Honky Tonk Hustlas - South Of Nashville) Similar to Hank III.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhKDWckR2bs (Lydia Loveless - Back On The Bottle explicit)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEubbpULr9Q (The Moonshine Bandits feat Big B. & Colt Ford - For The Outlawz explicit) Hick-hop or country rap.

I hope you enjoy some of these artists. Good luck!

Listen to any Hank Williams III album. He does a lot of sad, slow country songs, and he has even covered a few of his grandpa's songs, but he also writes a lot of songs about drinking, doing drugs, and having sex.

For "Controversy", try, "Ain't I right"- ( an old Marty Robbins tune)....
