the Bible says plainly that it is eternal but a friend of mine is arguing the original Greek words for "forever and ever." Help me understand this.

Hell, is the grave of all the unsaved souls so when Jesus Christ comes back to destroy the heavens an the earth by fire, the second death where the heavens an the earth shall be burned up by the hell fires, once your dead your dead your not coming back to life, unless God Jesus Christ saves you, an I am not talking about a church saving you, also the church age is over, that is why it is said that, judgment begins at the house of God an the house of God is the churches, an if your a child of God your supposed to flee to the mountains, an the mountains, is God Jesus Christ, the bible only, im just paraphrasing it.

"hell" is just a label, and how you translate those ancient words just a technicality. After you die, sooner or later you will end up in heaven or hell. What hell is and whether it is "eternal" is also irrelevent. The world will have ended, you would be denied the presence of God and thus be suffering for what would effectively be forever.

Me, I'm married and hell already feels pretty eternal....

No, it's temporary between death and the resurrection.

King David, guilty of adultery and murder, knew this.

    Psalms 16:10

10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

    Acts 2:27

27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

Just as death will give up the bodies to be restored in the resurrection so also the spirits will be released from hell.

    Revelation 20:13

13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

Jesus even preached to the spirits in "prison" or hell and he said he would and Peter tells us why.

Shortly before his crucifixion and death...

    John 5:25

25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.

    1 Peter 3

18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

    19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;

20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah....

He taught the same things there as he did in life, faith, repentance, baptism...(but they can't be baptized by themselves, being without a body, so someone has to be baptized on their behalf and they can accept it or not). Paul, speaking on the reality of the resurrection, mentions this practice....

    1 Corinthians 15:29

29 Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?

Peter tells us why Christ taught these spirits...

    1 Peter 4

6 For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.

To the one crucified next to him...

    Luke 23:43

43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.

  • Yes, Hell is Eternal. But for some God might grant Mercy if others will pray for them especially by praying the devotion to the Heavenly Court by Saint Lutgarde.

The Bible does say the wages of sin is death. Some Christian sects do believe all will be saved though.

As far as I'm concerned, Hell is eternal punishment. What, did ya think they just let you out or something?

As an Atheist it's easy to take everything I say as a criticism or a form of mockery, but I tell you this with upmost respect and honesty. There is no Hell, it's just an idea to instill fear onto people.

When you die, you just die. It's the harsh truth but it gives you more inventive to live a fulfilling life.
