When do cicadas in Kansas emerge?
I mean when do they start flying around. I thought they showed up the end of July last year, but I haven't seen them this year.

It is apparent the other answerer has no knowledge on the subject
or is even remotely close to you.
When the ground temperature reaches an approximate 69 degrees (F) the annual Cicadas or dog-day Cicadas will begin to emerge. The time of emergence has lent the name, "dog-days" as the summer months of july and august are when they make an appearance. The emergence are on 2 to 3 year intervals, but are so profuse that broods overlap, and also give the name 'annual'. That being in appearance only, and in reality a biological mistaken identity.
I'm 125 miles east of the Kansas border, and there is virtually no difference. The annuals should not be confused with the 13 to 17 year periodical that are set to emerge shortly in much of the eastern US. Those belong to the genus Magicicada and are set to hatch next year (2014). With both annuals and periodical coming off next year, it will be very noisy, no doubt.

One of the Dog-Day Cicadas that emerged in august of 2011,
overlap again had an emergence in 2012, have some pics archived.
More annuals will be coming off shortly, lower temperatures and increased
rainfall will probably delay a bit. Imagine both of us recall horrific heat and dry in 2012
