Hi Caitlyn: I am a registered nurse and one of the beinggirl.com women's health experts. Sounds like you will be starting your period soon, as discharge is a sign menstrual periods will probably start in about 6 to 18 months or LONGER. And, six months have passed since you first noticed your discharge. Vaginal discharge is a fluid produced by your body to moisten and cleanse the vagina.
While it begins before you start having periods understand this discharge will last for most of your adult life. Some days during your cycle the discharge is wet and liquidy, other days it is thick and ropy.
http://www.beinggirl.com/article/first-period/ AND http://www.beinggirl.com/article/signs-of-your-fir... are links to articles you may find helpful. What I can give you through this response won't be as thorough as what we have on the site. I think you will find this is a wonderful tool on many topics of interest to you.
So you know, the actual flow of your period doesn't feel like much - you usually can't feel it coming out. When you actually get a period, you may feel some dampness in the crotch area - this is probably a small amount of blood on your underwear.
Having a dark brown menstrual discharge is not unusual. Menstrual blood may be red, pink or brown. Often girls aren't aware of this when they first start and don't even know they are menstruating when in fact they are.
A lot of women/girls wear pantiliners on the days in between their period to absorb any natural discharge to help keep them feeling clean and fresh. About asking your mom, why not let her know you need to talk with her? Ask her to set aside some private time for the two of you. If you cannot ask to do this face to face, why not leave her a note or send her an email? It is really important to set up some kind of way to communicate with your mom. Maybe this is what your first "girl chat" should be about! Then you can move onto more personal topics once you have a comfortable way to communicate all set up.
You also mentioned cramps. Often stomach cramps are mistaken for menstrual cramps by teen girls anxious to start their period. Stomach cramps or cramping abdominal pain can be due to a number of causes and is the reason it is important to let mom know if this happening for you or for you to check with your health care provider if you do not live with your parents.
Menstrual related cramping doesn't begin months ahead, only a few days ahead and they are different from stomach pain. Girls often notice some cramping a few days before their period starts and/or during their period. These menstrual cramps are found in the lower abdomen, lower back, or down their legs. Cramps are caused by contractions of the uterus. Contractions are the tightening of the muscles of the uterus to help menstrual blood exit the body.
We find when girls are anxious about getting their period often they mistake any pain in the abdominal area for menstrual related cramps. Your uterus is not the only organ in your abdomen. If you are concerned about cramping or pain not related to your period, you should let an adult know what is happening. He/she can help you consult with your doctor/health care provider, if necessary.
Gave you a lot of info but hope it is helpful!

It's different for everyone. I start getting cramps about a week before my period starts.

I would say some time soon. Approach her and say "Hey mom, I think I'm getting my period soon." then ask her for what you need. That's how I asked my mom.
