You know every new cycle I really think the Republicans will go center... If not for sanity I would think it woukd be survival. Every time they prove me wrong and force their moderate leaders (McCain and Romney) and make them go to the extreme right to placate the extremists in the GOP so they can weather the Republican primaries. Both times they get soundly beaten.
I won't bet on the GOP to get it's house in order anymore. They actually appear more insane over the last couple of years. The extreme is the Republican party and they crucify the moderates in their own party. They get gleeful when someone just says "Obama is a socialist" without any proof or spell his name with a "0" instead of "O". They have gone over the deep end and I fear it is the majority of that party.
The Democrats had this problem when George W Bush was in office but the extreme left never actually controlled the Democrat party (and still don't). The Republican party today is controlled by extremists. A lot of you conservatives on here love that but that is why you are losing elections and members. You claim Obama is a extremist and a socialist but he is much more central than you people are extreme right. Extremes on either spectrum has always been rejected by Americans. Something to think about. Independents see Obama as more center than the Republicans as being center... that is why you lost to him in 2 elections and that delusion of Republicans have solidified Obama's historical legitimacy.
Shoukd the GOP go center? Of course the should but I think now that they won't. This generation of Republicans who lead the party will just have to die off until the younger and more compromising and realistic youth of that party take over.

As a moderate Democrat, I find it easy to despise and oppose the hard right, however I could possibly be swayed by a centralist Republican candidate like Eisenhower or even Nixon was.
My advice to the GOP is to lean a little more left and pick up voters like me.
