what do i say on card to someone whose husband dies of cancer?

My husband had a cousin who just died of cancer. He did not know him at all and yet his wife sent email to all of the cousins updating on his treatment and progress, etc. which we thought was rather inappropriate since we did not know them at all. Now we feel obligated to send her a card, so what do we say? No, don't tell me to say "My prayers are with you." We don't pray for anyone, so I cannot fib. Many thanks.

You could say that you're sorry for their loss and that your thoughts are with them during this difficult time. I'm not a religious person either so saying "my prayers are with you" doesn't seem right to me either.

A simple..."Sorry for your Loss". She most likely sent you emails because she felt burdened by the stress and wanted to share her feelings. That is not "Inappropriate"....If it is your husband's cousin, it's a shame they didn't know each other, she was just being nice and letting you know if he was still alive or dead. Oh goodness, yes a card will set you back a thousand dollars....It would be nice that you send her a sympathy card considering she went out of her way to share his progress with you and it's a simply nicety to do when there is a death in the family, regardless if you knew him or not. If you go the store and get a sympathy card, the words are already written in them, easy as pie. I assume you will not be attending the wake or funeral so a card is the LEAST You can do.

Karen, I'm sort of surprised at your lack of compassion. You feel obligated to send a card?

That's not a big thing to do. Just say that you are so sorry to hear of his passing. That's all that's needed.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Hope with time you'll be able to smile again when you think of the good times you had together. Know that we are thinking of you during this time.

"I am sorry for your loss, let us know if there's anything we can do to help you cope." Is the only thing I can think of.
