Can my 20 year old son continue to stay on my health insurance or does he have to get it through his new job?
I have carried my son on my private health insurance for many years. He has decided to take some time off from school and work a while. He started working a full time job about 6 weeks ago and will be eligible to get health insurance through his job after 90 days.
What are the guidelines for this situation? I worry that after a few months he'll decide he's made a bad choice and will want to quit this job and go on to school like I had hoped. In the meantime he's determined that he wants to work for a year or 2 and figure out what he wants to do with his life.
I don't know if he can just stay on my policy and not join the group health insurance at his job or not. Can you give me some guidance on this if you are familiar with the laws/rules regarding such a situation.
Any thoughtful advice is much appreciated!
I never said I carry him on my insurance at my job. I do not have insurance available through my job and I have had my own private coverage for years. Just as I stated in my question...
How do people arrive at such conclusions when the obvious is clearly spelled out!
Exactly why I asked for THOUGHTFUL answers!
So my question is, again, can he stay on my private insurance or is he required to join the plan at his job?

Just recently new regulations say he can stay on your plan for any reason, even if he is eligible to enroll in his employer’s plan. This is a recent change because prior to this change having access to employer coverage was the only thing that would keep him from staying on your plan.

If he can join the group health insurance at his job, then your job does not have to let him stay on your insurance. There is no law that says it can't let him stay, and there is no law that says it has to let him stay. The company where you work can do whatever it wants, as long as it does it consistently for everyone in this situation. The only rule is that whatever your employer decided to do in this type of situation, it has to do the same thing for everyone in this situation.
In any case, he does not "have to" get it through his job. He has a third option. He can buy insurance, himself, on his own or through a broker/agent, and not it get through any job.

Zarnev....can you source that change? Would like to know because I have clients it's affecting. Otherwise, the answer was that they can after January.
