Why is there a cliche to have "a Swiss bank account"?

Does Switzerland have special rules & regulations more lax than other countries? Movies and TV shows seem to mention Swiss bank accounts as a means of stashing money. If it were just to evade US authorities for tax/income reasons, why is it always "Swiss"? Why not "French" or "Australian" for example?

Is this simply a popular cliche or is there a viable reason?

Switzerland is a small country. Their banking laws allowed someone to open an account anonymously. It would just have a number. They were actually put in place in 1934 so that Jews could hide their money from the Nazis. If the bank had no names on the account, then the Nazis couldn't tell which ones belonged to Jews by looking at the names.

The law applied after World War II and people would use Swiss banks to hide money anonymously since they didn't need to put a name on the account. In the last 5 years, the European Union, of which Switzerland is not a part, and the United States have been putting pressure on Switzerland to change its laws.

    Switzerland lists bank accounts anonymously.

    ONLY account numbers.

    No names.

So you can hide money there and your government will never know, and you can get away without paying taxes.
