  • Laptop hard drive, old vs new, question?

My old Acer laptop of 5 1/2 years of heavy use & abuse took a dive. Assuming the hard drive (SATA) is still ok, do they make an adapter to plug it into a new laptop, also Acer more than likely, via USB so I can retrieve my files? Also is there a way to get programs installed on the old drive to install to the new drive, particularly Microsoft Office? And one more, since the new laptop will likely not have an optical drive, I've read where this can mean there's room for a second drive to be installed, true?

    Thanks

  • What's wrong with this laptop? Hardware diagnostic question?

The other day my laptop battery dies, I was too slow plugging it in. This has happened many times through the years I've owned it. Plug it in, instantly the charge light comes on, and it can be restarted...typically anyway...

So I did that and it wouldn't restart. The charge light wasn't on either. Hmm, this is new.

So I did the ground up diagnostics- make sure the cord is attached properly, make sure it's in the wall all the way etc etc etc. All was good, just no juice, no power up.

Figured either my battery or my cord was dead. Cord plugged into a buddy's laptop, works fine. Ordered a new battery, new battery doesn't work either, nor does the charge light come on when plugged in with the new battery. Ok so it's not the battery or the cord.

Took apart- no obvious wires have come detached in any obvious way.

Is my processor shot? Why will it not charge nor turn on? Is it pure coincidence that it happened as the battery died (since this has happened dozens of times before)?

    What can I do?

  • Is Roku free to use once you buy the box?

I realize you have to pay for internet and Netflix or whatever...but is the box free to use liike a Bluray player that streams, or is it a subscription service to use the Roku? Also, do they have DVR capabilities.

(I tried searching the Roku site but can't find direct answers to those questions)

Easier than skating all over the place (or running if soccer)? Or you like being the sole last defense your team has?

  • Why is there a cliche to have "a Swiss bank account"?

Does Switzerland have special rules & regulations more lax than other countries? Movies and TV shows seem to mention Swiss bank accounts as a means of stashing money. If it were just to evade US authorities for tax/income reasons, why is it always "Swiss"? Why not "French" or "Australian" for example?

Is this simply a popular cliche or is there a viable reason?

  • Can I use any wireless modem / gateway for AT&T DSL internet, or does it have to be AT&T's?

I think my modem died. Can I buy whichever one I want, say one from Walmart or whatever...or does it have to be an AT&T one to work with their DSL?

  • Michigan Landlord responsibilities? Clearing snow? Mowing?

I'm looking either for someone familiar with Michigan law respecting a landlord/tenant responsibility toward clearing snow and lawnmowing, other maintenance.....or a reference to actual laws regarding these issues.

Is it the landlord's responsibility to clear snow from driveways so tenants can get to work? If it hasn't been addressed or printed in a lease, whose responsibility does it become? Source?

Is it the landlord's responsibility to take care of the lawn? Again, if it's not directly addressed in a lease, whose responsibility does it then become?

Are these assumed to be the tenant's obligations?

One last question: If the landlord assumes responsibility to clear snow, but neglects to do so in a timely manner causing the tenant to get stuck and/or be late for work, what are the tenant's rights in this case? Source?

    Much appreciated

  • Snowblower, tractor-mounted: 2-stage versus single stage ?

I know the difference, just asking a question about the performance. I've only ever used tractor-mounted snowblowers, all single stage, and they work quite good. The augers spin crazy fast along with the throwing paddles (single stage) and it gathers and whips that snow like no tomorrow. Now, going to a tractor-mounted 2-stage...would there be a real reason to pay the extra for a 2stage, apples to apples as far as tractor motor horsepower?

  • Line 6 Spider Valve MKII... 212 or 112...both 40Watts, so which is better?

Hoping someone with actual experience here could help out...

I'm trying to decide between two amps, the Line 6 Spider Valve MKII 112 (one 12" speaker) or the 212 (2 speakers). Oddly both are listed as 40watts.

My question is not if you think these are good amps because everyone looks for something difference as a matter of preference. I know I want one of them based on numerous factors that I'm looking for (including budget)...but I don't have the ability to play them side by side to hear the difference myself. But what would the sound difference be if there are 2 identical speakers splitting the power? Each speaker would theoretically be driven less and seems like it'd be less punchy...or am I wrong? Would it add stereo and more volume?

There has to be a noticeable difference of some type or they wouldn't make them both and sell them both.

  • Does Walmart get inferior versions of electronics, compared to the same exact model #s @ Best Buy or Sears?

I know someone who works at Sears and she said the same model # item at Walmart is 'less exact, less quality' than the same thing at Sears, or Best Buy for instance. Is this true? I've also heard that certain devices which do not pass the stringent test specs, but still work fine, may go to the box warehouses but the elite ones go to the slightly pricier stores. But then I've also heard Sam's Club (which stocks essentially the same brands/models as walmart) carries top notch electronics gear...so I'm confused.

Anyone have credible info on this?

  • Do they make a Blu-Ray/VCR combo?

I tried Google, but results indicated no such device exists, other than a Panasonic Blu Ray which plays VHS tapes but is not a recording VCR.

Anyone know of one? Not a regular DVD, looking for the Bluray combo.

    Thanks!

  • Income tax question- Is 21% being held out of each pay a good amount?

I average about 79% take home. I have myself, a wife and three kids- so a family of 5. I'm the only one working. I'm wondering if this is adequate and if it's enough to get a decent refund? I'm claiming only 1 deduction, not the full 5.

  • Poll: Barbecue lovers, what would you be willing to pay for a good rack of ribs at a roadside stand? ?

Thinking of starting one. I have experience, I do St Louis & Baby Backs, and i have my own secret rub and sauce and I do it the right way with real wood smoke, not like most popular restaurants who bake & grill.

A full rack is about $18-25 in most restaurants...what would you be willing to pay for real barbecue ribs?

  • What's a safe offer to submit to a bank on a foreclosed home? Looking for experience not guesses!?

I hear stories that people get houses that appraise at $175,000 for $50,000 but that's few & far between I'm sure. What's a good rule of thumb that banks are likely to look at?

  • What's the reasoning for prices always ending in 9s? 19.99 instead of just saying $20?

Wouldn't LESS 9s make it look thinner, cheaper?

I've never understood why all the fuss with the .99 everywhere.

Is it the whole saving a penny thing?

  • GM 3800 3.8L RPMs bouncing, sometimes stalling?

    2003 Chevy Impala,

as the question states, it hiccups occasionally (every 10-15 seconds or so) when idling, and when coasting at highway speeds after it's upshifted and the RPMs settle. It does it when I brake too, and in some cases has stalled when braking. Is it the MAF sensor? I hope sopmeone who's been there can answer this, since the MAF costs about $150, I'd hate to get it and then someone say "No it's not that, it's such & such..." lol, THANKS!
