What's the reasoning for prices always ending in 9s? 19.99 instead of just saying $20?

Wouldn't LESS 9s make it look thinner, cheaper?

I've never understood why all the fuss with the .99 everywhere.

Is it the whole saving a penny thing?

Update:

But, I think MOST people do the OPPOSITE of what marketers think. If you want a pair of jeans at the store, do you run out and tell your buddy "It's on sale for $19.99!"? No, you say 20 bucks. Or ninety-nine cents? No, it's a buck. We all know it'll be over that anyway with tax, so I think the days of using the 9s are long gone in a logical world.

I get what your saying, you think it would make it look cheaper without all the 9's. But isn't 19 something cheaper than 20 something? That's the whole point, so they can still say it's cheaper than 20 dollars, even though only by a penny. Does that make sense? It's kinda hard to explain. but the main point is that they're trying to make it look cheaper.

    Hope this helps

This is more of a marketing effort. Marketers study human psychology and know that people don't actually read prices for what they are; instead we get a general idea of how much something costs. So in our heads, $19.99 seems like a much better deal than $20.

    Its just a psychological thing.

Why does gas always have 9/10th of a cent on the end of it. So today I paid 3.159 a gallon to fill up my car. Why not just say 3.16? But that's the way it has always been I guess.
