Can I use any wireless modem / gateway for AT&T DSL internet, or does it have to be AT&T's?

I think my modem died. Can I buy whichever one I want, say one from Walmart or whatever...or does it have to be an AT&T one to work with their DSL?

Update:

My old one is an old white 2Wire AT&T DSL modem/gateway that I got when I had previous service a few yrs ago, so it was not being leased, and they won't fix it (I wouldn't even bother asking them). I did end up finding a list of compatible modems and purchased one on Amazon for $65...AT&T's site has 2 models for sale @ $100/ea.

A lot depends on your contract. If you own the current modem (AT&T sold it to you when you got your service, you can call AT&T and get a list of compatible modems.

More likely, AT&T is leasing you the modem. Call their customer service and ask them. They can check your contract easily.

If they own it, they will fix it for free

    Good Luck

I am not sure if they call it ADSL or ADSL2, but just make sure that it is for DSL and not cable. Sometime after wireless failed and other issues with that and separate wireless router, I got a Motorola Netopia 2247-N8. I forget where I got it, but I think it was Walmart or Target.

Initially I just programmed it with my same DSL username/password, set its wireless SSID and key to the same that the 2Wire was, and everything worked fine. One of these days I should set it to WPA2 instead of WEP, but I still have one old wireless-b device that does not do WPA.

The only time I was disconnected for a time (sync, but no service) was when they apparently changed my PPPoE password without telling me. But it was after I got home from work about 9 hours before the new password worked, so I imagine there was some other issue that affected others and just happened to get fixed about 5 PM after others complained.

If you have a static IP address with your DSL that is what your internet interface in the router gets. There are a few connection types, try the direct connection. As far as your LAN is concerned, the router should be a DHCP server which gives out a range op IP addresses, so that all your laptops/computers can get that stuff from the router. Nothing static on your LAN.
