How about the historical attempt to totally obliterate the mythology of the many Native American (Indian!) cultures and the resurgence of interest in these by 'New World' spiritual seekers?

Does the project have to deal with mythology?
If not, do a project on how America has changed since the attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on 9/11. Explore attitudes towards Muslims and towards the Patriot Act.
