Reagan grew the size of the Federal Government tremendously, so why is he such a Hero to Conservatives?

I thought they were about "Smaller Government"?

==========================

Reagan grew the size of the federal government tremendously. Reagan promised “to move boldly, decisively, and quickly to control the runaway growth of federal spending,” but federal spending “ballooned” under Reagan. He bailed out Social Security in 1983 after attempting to privatize it, and set up a progressive taxation system to keep it funded into the future.

Reagan did what he had to do. In the end, he was a pragmatist, but more importantly, you do know that Congress controls the purse strings, right? That's the way it is supposed to work under the Constitution 'tho most recently program increases are written in and the Senate avoids voting on budget matters where it can. Please read up on the Congress under Reagan when Tip O'Neill was Speaker of the House and Robert Byrd was majority leader of the Senate. They knew how to expand government!

Libs always like to include numbers when they will make their case and leave them out when it will harm it.

Exactly how many Trillions of dollars did the Dr. Evil Reagan grow the government?

If he had succeeded in privatizing Social Security, wouldn't that have shrunk the government, and so the Dems who stopped him and forced him to switch to a big government solution now get to criticize him for doing the only thing Libtard controlled congress would allow?

Sorry, guess this question was meant for someone a lot dumber than me.

The administration of President Reagan has been replaced via a mythology of the Reagan Presidency. Now, President Reagan could be too liberal to win in a Republican universal, if he ran on his record.

I love how libbies say that Reagan and Bush grew the government, and Clinton shrunk it, but when it comes to Obama, congress is the only one that can actually do those things...and the republican house is soley responsible at that....it seems even the senate has nothing to do with it where Obama is concerned

to answer your Q Reagan did not expand the govt but strengthened the military which is by all accounts the reason why millions of people were freed from the chains of communist Russia during the Reagan years

"Small govt" is another term for "lower taxes" and not actual smaller govt.

It's a political tool, say one thing, mean something else. It helps to keep two lots of people together.

The far right BNP in the UK use this a lot, they use the term "British" to mean white British people, and not black British people. They use a lot of words to make the general public think they are sensible, but keep the hard core racists happy too.

Not to mention he took on massive piles of debt. Just look at a graph of debt levels with each President placed on the x-axis. The slope rises tremendously when Reagan appears on the scene.

Today's Conservatives go by what Fox News and the Koch Brothers tell them.

Greasy, do some research. I think you'll find that Congress was demoncrat. Reagan compromised to get legislation passed. At one time Reagan was a demoncrat & he thought that he could work with them for an effective government. He wanted to grow the economy by using Friedman Economics. Congress would only pass spending bills.

That's a great question. I'm old enough to remember when true Conservatives hated Reagan. back then we only had 4 channels and I remember them bashing him on a Sunday morning talk show that was hosted by William F. Buckley, Jr. Most of today's Conservatives don't even know who he was.

    Gwb expanded gov too.

When the reps say they are for smaller gov what they mean is they want smaller gov when a dem is at the helm. They want the painful budget cuts associated to the dem president.
