The more the fruits of knowledge become accessible to mankind the faster the decline in religious beliefs.

Even God knew this and tried to keep the fruits of the tree of knowledge from us.

Crèpe!....I'm a scientist AND a Christian... I've realised that the more we learn, the more we find that we have a lot more to learn. Religion and science aren't mutually exclusive... religion tells us WHO did it, science tries to explain HOW He did it.
I suppose you think that EVERYTHING has come about 'by accident' ?.... yeah, sure!

I may be very wrong about this, but I view the gap between religion and science as being mostly the result of a belief in magic.
Was there a god who waved his hand and said let there be light? Or does the universe follow a set of rules that can be understood and applied to our benefit?
Education makes magic less and less reasonable to believe in.
I would say that it was the people who invented god who knew the dangers of allowing the sheep to become educated.

Okay, now:
Agree or Disagree with this quote about Freud by his granddaugher Dr Sophie Freud?
[Sophie Freud] dismisses most of her grandfather's theories as "outdated" and says that another psychiatrist, Irving Goffman, "had a much better grasp on human motivation than Freud." She also faults her grandfather for "being very angry about any critique and viewing people who criticized him, or thought otherwise, as villains." Freud and Hitler didn't just share a neighbourhood in Vienna, she says in the film. "They also shared the ambition to convince other men of the one and only truth that they had come upon." "Never could he be wrong," she says. "That lasted for 50 years after his death, until a few people started to dare to say, "Yes, but ..."
"The bad thing was that psychoanalysis kept itself apart from the scientific advances of time, stuck in a 19th-century way of thinking."
Also from Dr Freud :
. "In my eyes," she once remarked, "both Adolf Hitler and Sigmund Freud were false prophets of the 20th century."

FROM JUNG now:
“I have treated many hundreds of patients. Among those in the second half of life - that is to say, over 35 - there has not been one whose problem in the last resort was not that of finding a religious outlook on life. It is safe to say that every one of them fell ill because he had lost that which the living religions of every age have given their followers, and none of them has really been healed who did not regain his religious outlook.”
― C.G. Jung, Modern Man in Search of a Soul

Finally, why does true or untrue matter ? Start with IS JESUS THE SON OF GOD ?

True: hardly anyone today believes the Earth has four corners and you will fall off if you travel far enough.
Religion retreats from the light of knowledge much as cockroaches retreat from a kitchen light. It becomes a God of the Gaps, because I don't know is an unacceptable answer to any religion (it must be certain or it is irrelevant).
