I have a bowl design made from sheet metal, i need to find the surface area of a flat part before it gets formed into a bowl

Well, is this a stupid level elementary school level project or a tough smart actual metal working level one. I ask because metal when it is worked in a bowl is normally stretched and thinned so the area of the original sheet is the same as that of the area of the rim of the bowl - so a round bowl 12" across could have been made from a sheet 12" across so 6*6*Pi (Pi * r squared)
On the other hand, if they want the area of the sheet metal - like you were painting the bowl then it gets much more complicated and might be the area of part of a sphere.
