Does my transmission need to be replaced?

I have a 1998 Toyota Corolla VE with a 1.8L 4 cylinder engine. The car seems to have a small amount of jerk when I drive at lower speeds. I paid $100 to have my transmission serviced, but literally all that they did was change my fluid (which I bought and brought to the shop myself, along with my own filter). I have to say that the car's a trooper because the transmission didn't lock up after I changed the fluid for the first time at 150,000 miles. But that said, this didn't fix the problem. Is this a symptom of worse things to come if I don't change the transmission, or is this a simple fix?

A little jerk at low speeds may not even be the transmission. What happens when you stomp the gas pedal? Does the trans shift at 24, 36 and 45 MPH? If it doesn't dog on longer than the "norm" that, once again may not be the trans. What did the garage say when they test-drove it after the new fluid and filter? They may say the trans is fine but that the CV joints are sloppy. That's the Constant Velocity joints on front wheel drive cars. If they aren't lubed often, they will get sloppy and "rattle" especially at low speeds. They will seem better at high speeds because they won't be so noticeable.

I wouldn't panic...just take it back to the garage that did the fluid and ask them to drive it and tell you if the trans is having an issue. I wouldn't panic...I JUST rebuilt my trans for the first time...31+ years and 381,000 miles...

  • waiting that long for a fluid change can do just as much damage as not changing it ever. the clutches develop a varnish with the old fluid and the new fluid will wash that away. nothing simple there as I see it.

No simple fix. You screwed up your trooper when you didn't take care of it. It's headed out.
