If you post the model of the Mazda, I can give you a fairly accurate price for both parts and labor. You already gave the year and make, i just need the model. Also, DO NOT used re-manufactured parts unless you have no other choice as you will likely be fixing it again if you do. Also, I recommend using car quest for brake shoes and pads, they are the most reliable and noise free out there, and are very modestly priced as well.

MASTER CYLINDERS go bad from aging BRAKE FLUID USE! The better car companies recommend that you change the brake fluid EVERY 2-3 years as it absorbs moisture from the air and turns TOXIC and ACIDIC and eventually into liquid sandpaper. As it SPOILS, it takes on more and more water till it loses it's BOILING POINT< and its ability to lubricate brake seals and protect the ALUMINUM brake parts! This is why people need to change their MASTER CYLINDERS and why BRAKE HOSES rot, and brake lines CORRODE from the inside out! IT is ALSO why calipers seize up and wheel cylinders go bad and ABS Pumps go south! THE ANSWER is to change your BRAKE FLUID after it turns BROWN or every 3 years, TOPS. Your master is SAVEABLE probably RIGHT NOW by PRESSRUE BLEEDING IT with fresh GENUIEN MAZDA brake fluid fromteh dealership! the dear runs SPECIALS on this service and it is VERY MUCH WORTH IT! It should cost LESS than repalcing your MASTER< and you WILL have to POWER BLEED THE SYSTEM anyway! if this is a MANUAL car, then you have to pressure bleed the CLUTCH fluid as well! TRY A PRESSURE BLEED FIRST as this revitaize the leaking seals within yoru MASTER most times! POWER BLEEDING will save your ABS PUMP< and also your CALIPERS and lines and hoses, too! GOOD LUCK and use the GENUINE DEALERSHIP FLUID ONLY!

It will probably cost you about $150.00.
I believe "backyard mechanics" are almost a thing of the past now. Changing a master cylinder is an easy job. Remove the rod from the brake pedal, remove the hydraulic lines and unbolt the master cylinder. Prior to installing a new one, you need to bleed it of air. I'm sure instructions for that come with it.

Master cylinders are usually about $100, with an hour labor at $90/hour.
Rear brakes are about $150.
Don't have rotors or drums machined, as they would be too thin and machining is usually not necessary.
