What kind of butterfly is this?

I found it in my backyard and it was dead but I notice these types of insects in my backyard flying around all the time so I was just wondering what they were but, what type of insects are these?

They are always out during the spring time crawling up the house to make their cocoons.

    This lovely butterfly is Nymphalis antiopa. Here in Britain, where it is known as the Camberwell Beauty, we count ourselves very lucky to see it, as it is rather a rare visitor. I believe it is known as the Mourning Cloak in North America. Its caterpillars feed on the leaves of trees such as willows.
