How can the doctrine of the Holy Trinity be unscriptural?

The Church compiled the Bible in the 4th century, keeping writings that conformed to its teachings. It is clear that the Church held to the doctrine of the Holy Trinity by that time -- God is Father, Son/Word and Holy Spirit, and so by definition, what the Church believed is "scriptural". What is the basis for calling the Holy Trinity "unscriptural"?

Do remember that neither "personal savior," "altar call," nor "Kingdom Hall" is in the Bible (words used by Noncatholics), but "confess your sins" and "he who believes and is baptized shall be saved" are, while answering about the Holy Trinity.

Update:

Some answers quote or refer to the scriptures, which is admirable. But how can you quote the scriptures put together by a Church that you claim misunderstands them? What makes the content of these books correct, if those who selected them are so misguided that they probably should have selected other books for the scriptures? Perhaps the scriptures don't mean what you think they do?

    No. Although the New Testament does not teach the Trinity as a formal doctrine, it clearly teaches that Jesus is the Son of God. Jesus prays to the Father "thy will be done," implying that he is not the same person as the Father. He promises to send the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity, to guide the disciples and keep them faithful to the truth of his teachings.

    By the second century, the Fathers of the Church, after many years of reflection on the teachings of Jesus, began to formulate the doctrine of the Trinity, showing our growing understanding of the nature of God.

    The Trinity is merely the IMPLICIT word of God in Scripture in that we use scripture to PROVE that each of the Persons is God. This scriptural proof demands an explanation since scripture also maintains there is only one God. The Trinity is the only & best explanation of that scriptural dilemma. However, we can still use many verses that REFER to the Trinity with the details found only in the creeds; namely, Matthew 28:19, 2 Cor. 13:13, 1 Peter 1:2, John 14:26 & Romans 15:30.

    The Jews do not believe the Trinity dogma and neither did the early Christians. The Trinity was not part of the original Christian religion.

    The New Encyclopædia Britannica says: “Neither the word Trinity, nor the explicit doctrine as such, appears in the New Testament, nor did Jesus and his followers intend to contradict the Shema in the Old Testament: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord’ (Deut. 6:4). . . . The doctrine developed gradually over several centuries and through many controversies. . . . By the end of the 4th century . . . the doctrine of the Trinity took substantially the form it has maintained ever since.”—(1976), Micropædia, Vol. X, p. 126.

    The New Catholic Encyclopedia states: “The formulation ‘one God in three Persons’ was not solidly established, certainly not fully assimilated into Christian life and its profession of faith, prior to the end of the 4th century. But it is precisely this formulation that has first claim to the title the Trinitarian dogma. Among the Apostolic Fathers, there had been nothing even remotely approaching such a mentality or perspective.”—(1967), Vol. XIV, p. 299.

    In The Encyclopedia Americana we read: “Christianity derived from Judaism and Judaism was strictly Unitarian [believing that God is one person]. The road which led from Jerusalem to Nicea was scarcely a straight one. Fourth century Trinitarianism did not reflect accurately early Christian teaching regarding the nature of God; it was, on the contrary, a deviation from this teaching.”—(1956), Vol. XXVII, p. 294L.

    According to the Nouveau Dictionnaire Universel, “The Platonic trinity, itself merely a rearrangement of older trinities dating back to earlier peoples, appears to be the rational philosophic trinity of attributes that gave birth to the three hypostases or divine persons taught by the Christian churches. . . . This Greek philosopher’s [Plato, fourth century B.C.E.] conception of the divine trinity . . . can be found in all the ancient [pagan] religions.”—(Paris, 1865-1870), edited by M. Lachâtre, Vol. 2, p. 1467.

    John L. McKenzie, S.J., in his Dictionary of the Bible, says: “The trinity of persons within the unity of nature is defined in terms of ‘person’ and ‘nature’ which are G[ree]k philosophical terms; actually the terms do not appear in the Bible. The trinitarian definitions arose as the result of long controversies in which these terms and others such as ‘essence’ and ‘substance’ were erroneously applied to God by some theologians.”—(New York, 1965), p. 899.

    Claims to the contrary are just that -- claims. The scholars who provided their opinions in the above citations have studied early Christianity and know what they're talking about. The Trinity was introduced through the Nicene Creed, which was a statement of faith that was developed during the first ecumenical council, held at Nicaea in 325. Since then, Trinity believers have had to ignore the Baptism of Jesus and the vision of Stephen. The bottom line is that the nature and ways of God have been mystified over the centuries. It is, if anything, a corruption of the Godhead doctrine, which shows that heaven is ruled by three persons: God the Father, His Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. Jesus and the Holy Spirit operate under the authority of the Father and thus, are identified as God, but are not the Father. The conflicts caused by the three persons in one God of the Trinity are avoided by recognizing that there is an order in heaven, something that is lost in the Trinity thinking, especially as it is expressed in the creeds.

    That is why Jesus has to return and disclose all the truth to the Jews , the Christians and to the people of the world ,on what they are in conflict and cause millions of lives to be slaughtered, since he was lift up to GOD in high heaven 2000 yrs ago.

    I totally get what you are saying. In the beginning was the word, and the word was God and God was the word. And the word became flesh and dwelt among us. However, you also never see the word "trinity" in the bible. You see Jesus, the Son, praying to God, the Father and you see that the miracles were God's action and that the Holy Spirit is described as being masculine. But Jesus is not God. In Genesis, God is speaking to 'someone' when He says: "Let US make man in our image; after our kind; after our likeness." Jesus, In John 17, when he's praying in Gethsemane, asks God to glorify him with the glory he had before the world was made. It pleases God that we honor His Son. Jesus sits on the right hand of God. But to use the word "trinity" is just as erroneous as "alter call or Kingdom Hall."

    Trinity

    Son of man is a biblical name from daniel 7 OT it is not saying He is a human tho He was fully human fully God. Son of man is a divine term which is Jesus literally claiming to be God.

    Approach the Ancient of Days (obviously God) so boldly, this one called Son of Man

    Can receive authority Glory and SOVEREIGN power (this means absolute all power omnipotence)

    Can receive worship from Every people and language

    What being can have a dominion and kingdom that last forever and He is King besides God Himself.

    Jesus is Son of Man God in the flesh

    God is ONE being consisting of 3 persons a personhood is made of their soul (mind emotion will, another 3 in 1).

    Just like we are soul (mind emotion will) body and spirit in one Human being

    This is kinda gives u a idea of the similarity

    Also think time past present future yet time is one

    U know just cuz something doesnt make sense to our finite minds doesnt mean its not true. 1000 years ago wouldnt ppl think flight was impossible, yet today we have jets approaching hypersonic speed (mach 20) sound travels at supersonic which is mach ONE. If we cant comprehend earthly things fully how can we understand fully the infinite creater God. Can the axe understand the human. Our lack of ability to rationalize understand isnt a good bases for accepting truth. Is it truth period. The fact we cant understand fully shows God as the transcendant God.

    John Biddle, born in 1615, was the father of Unitarianism in England. He published a pamphlet called "Twelve Arguments Refuting the Deity of the Holy Spirit." In 1645, this pamphlet was seized and Biddle was imprisoned and came close to getting the death penalty for this crime. He later died in jail. The following are his twelve arguments:

    1. Whoever is distinguished from God is not God

    The Holy Spirit is distinguished from God.

    Therefore the Holy Spirit is not God.

    2.He who gave the Holy Spirit to the Israelites is Jehova Alone.

    Therefore the Holy Spirit is not Jehova, or God.

    3. Whoever does not speak of his own accord is not God.

    The Holy Spirit does not speak of his own accord.

    Therefore the Holy Spirit is not God.

    4. Whoever is taught is not God.

    Whoever is told what to say by another is taught.

    Christ speaks what he is told.

    Let us recall a truth that Jesus Christ expressed: “Go in through the narrow gate; because broad and spacious is the road leading off into destruction, and many are the ones going in through it; whereas narrow is the gate and cramped the road leading off into life, and few are the ones finding it.” The road of expediency is broad; that of right principles is narrow.—Matthew 7:13, 14.

    At the inception of Christianity, there were two ways available to those espousing that unpopular faith—hold to the uncompromising teachings and principles of Christ and the Scriptures or gravitate toward the wide and easygoing path of compromise with the world of that time. As we will see, the history of the first 400 years shows which path the majority eventually chose.

    The Seduction of Philosophy

    Historian Will Durant explains: “The Church took over some religious customs and forms common in pre-Christian [pagan] Rome—the stole and other vestments of pagan priests, the use of incense and holy water in purifications, the burning of candles and an everlasting light before the altar, the worship of the saints, the architecture of the basilica, the law of Rome as a basis for canon law, the title of Pontifex Maximus for the Supreme Pontiff, and, in the fourth century, the Latin language . . . Soon the bishops, rather than the Roman prefects, would be the source of order and the seat of power in the cities; the metropolitans, or archbishops, would support, if not supplant, the provincial governors; and the synod of bishops would succeed the provincial assembly. The Roman Church followed in the footsteps of the Roman state.”—The Story of Civilization: Part III—Caesar and Christ.

    This attitude of compromise with the Roman world stands in stark contrast to the teachings of Christ and the apostles. The apostle Peter counseled: “Beloved ones, . . . I am arousing your clear thinking faculties by way of a reminder, that you should remember the sayings previously spoken by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles. You, therefore, beloved ones, having this advance knowledge, be on your guard that you may not be led away with them by the error of the law-defying people and fall from your own steadfastness.” Paul clearly counseled: “Do not become unevenly yoked with unbelievers. For what fellowship do righteousness and lawlessness have? Or what sharing does light have with darkness? . . . ‘“Therefore get out from among them, and separate yourselves,” says Jehovah, “and quit touching the unclean thing”’; ‘“and I will take you in.”’”—2 Peter 3:1, 2, 17; 2 Corinthians 6:14-17; Revelation 18:2-5.

    In spite of this clear admonition, apostate Christians of the second century took on the trappings of the pagan Roman religion. They moved away from their pure Biblical origins and instead clothed themselves with pagan Roman garb and titles and became imbued with Greek philosophy. Professor Wolfson of Harvard University explains in The Crucible of Christianity that in the second century, there was a great influx into Christianity of “philosophically trained gentiles.” These admired the wisdom of the Greeks and thought they saw similarities between Greek philosophy and teachings of the Scriptures. Wolfson continues: “Sometimes they variously express themselves to the effect that philosophy is God’s special gift to the Greeks by way of human reason as Scripture is to the Jews by way of direct revelation.” He continues: “The Fathers of the Church . . . entered upon their systematic undertaking to show how, behind the homely language in which Scripture likes to express itself, there are hidden the teachings of the philosophers couched in the obscure technical terms coined in their Academy, Lyceum, and Porch [centers for philosophical discussion].”

    Such an attitude left the way open for Greek philosophy and terminology to infiltrate Christendom’s teachings, especially in the fields of Trinitarian doctrine and the belief in an immortal soul. As Wolfson states: “The [church] Fathers began to look in the stockpile of philosophic terminology for two good technical terms, of which one would be used as a designation of the reality of the distinctness of each member of the Trinity as an individual and the other would be used as a designation of their underlying common unity.” Yet, they had to admit that “the conception of a triune God is a mystery which cannot be solved by human reason.” In contrast, Paul had clearly recognized the danger of such contamination and ‘perversion of the good news’ when he wrote to the Galatian and Colossian Christians: “Look out: perhaps there may be someone who will carry you off as his prey through the philosophy [Greek, phi·lo·so·phi′as] and empty deception according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary things of the world and not according to Christ.”—Galatians 1:7-9; Colossians 2:8; 1 Corinthians 1:22, 23.
