What happened to Lil Wayne's voice?
On his older songs his voice sounds pretty normal (I noticed this when I was listening to his songs with Big Tymers, so in his 2004 songs at least). Now it's weird and scratchy, I almost didn't recognize that it was his voice. Is that something they've done in the studio now or is it somethin else? I almost wanted to say it was because of smoking but that doesn't make sense, because then half of the other rappers would sound weird like that too by now.

He probably smoked too much of something lol Im convined that hes secretly a frog person. He sounds like a frog to me.

Have you ever seen the movie "RoboCop"? It's kind of like that. Lil Wayne was in a horrible accident so they had to rebuild him into a robot, hence his new robot sounding voice.

He takes pills that make his voice like that.
He just wants to sound like a hood rat rapper, it's his signature voice
Besides in a song he says: yes I am wheezy but I ain't asthmatic, so we know that he is aware of his voice being wheezy and scratchy sounding.
Or since he does so many drugs, it could be messing up his vocal cords over time.
He doesn't only smoke, he snorts, drinks, shoots up, drops LSD, and parties a lot.

he sounds like that because he drinks a lot of dirty sprite and liquor, pops pills, and smoke. hes never sober. high 24/7. it can really change your voice and identity. sometimes when hes recording a song he hits the blunt and tries to hold it in while rapping a couple of lines, that why you always hear the lighter flickering in the background
