What is the best way to clean spilt motor oil out of trunk carpeting?

Okay, so I bought a five quart plastic jug o’ motor oil, one with a plastic screw-on top. I poured probably half of it into the engine, screwed the lid back on tightly and put the jug into the trunk. As if by magic the lid became unscrewed and now, I get to clean up this mess from out of the carpet and the particle board backing of the spare tire cover. Oh, yeah there's also a huge puddle of oil in the spare tire well. Thank you!

WHOOPS! Use several old TOWELS to get the bulk of it out! Get some TSP cleaner from the hardware store and mix with WATER to get moreof ti out! TSP dissolves the oil a bit and allws wtater to opiock it oup! use OIL SORB fond at most AUTO STORES which is like KITTY LITTER. Then use a VACUUM to get the OIL SORB OUT or a small hand shovel! use BRAKE CLEANER spray as the LAST RESORT! iT is DRY CLEANER in a can and can dissolve most stains and oi clumps easily! ALSO DAWN was used to clean the DUCKS found in the OIL SPILLS and then some! IT DOES remove oil! GOOD LUCK! you have a REAL JOB on your hands here! GOOD LUK!!

Unfortunately I doubt the carpet is recoverable and is now ruined. Get some oil absorbent material and soak-up the worst of the oil, then degrease with a solvent like white spirit. Remove the old carpet and get some carpet off-cut that has a colour either similar or contrasting to the original and cut that to fit the backing board to your trunk and replace. Job done - been there done that

A big bucket, barrel, or troth. Fill with water, add laundry detergent, place carpet in and swish it about, rinse. repeat as needed.
