Free player in members area in runescape?

So I just started playing runescape for the first time since a year and a half, i noticed that it was now runescape 3 or something, and i got a weird intro about a fire guy and an ice guy fighting somewhere, and then about a war with trolls, and when i could finally control my character, i looked into the world map and noticed i was in burthorpe. as far as i could remember, anything west of falador was member-only, so what has happened?

It's been about a year i think since the f2p world was expanded. Burthorpe and Taverly have been added to the areas that f2p folks can visit and they were also converted into a new tutorial area. If you go thru the tutorial you'll be introduced to all the skills in Runescape.

Also as part of that update, all skills are available to f2p members up to level 5 so you get a chance to try out members only skills.
