Why are we giving temporary foreign workers visas when there are so many unemployed Canadians?

I deal with university students on a regular basis. To make things short, my job is to find them work. Over the past few years, I've noticed a steady increase in the number of unemployed graduates in BC. I can't speak for other provinces, although I'm sure the trend is the same, but I'm annoyed at our government granting temporary foreign workers work visas when our own graduates cannot find jobs. What changes has the Harper government brought to solve this issue? I know there are many Australians dying to move to Canada, but I do not support it. The TFW worker visa shouldn't be abused.

Some of the jobs are those Canadians don't want because the pay is less than minimum wage. Picking fruit and harvesting soft crops doesn't pay well, yet it pays foreign workers to come to Canada work the season and return. But that is a different situation.

I am angered by the policy for I am one of those unemployed people who can't find work. I'm middle-aged, instead of just out of college/university, but I get the excuses..don't have the experience we're looking for or too much experience.

Canadians SHOULD be working before giving temporary foreign workers visas.

Unfortunately, there are more unemployed Canadians than the stats show. Those who DON'T collect E.I., welfare, disability etc. and ARE actively seeking employment and qualify for NO assistance.

I can tell you that some of the TFW programs have been cancelled in Alberta due to abuse by both the employer and workers.

I am sadly aware of one example where at the time a company hired some of these workers under a contract of guaranteed hours. The local people then were scheduled after as the work load dropped the locals were laid off and the contracted ones had the shifts until the contract ended.

These workers did receive a similar pay.

It is not a simple solution.

    EDIT

Suggest you contact the NEW Immigration Minister via your Member of Parliament. Express your observations to the New guy at the top. Doing to both usually gets you at least an answer.

The TFW program is full of abuse. The workers don't get paid overtime or holiday pay. They can't complain, because they NEED the job to stay in the country. We need immigrants for those jobs, not temporary foreign workers to drive wages down to the point where Canadians won't do those jobs.

I agree that it's a problem, but I think a factor is that there aren't enough Canadians who go into a specific field, which leads to labour shortage of that specific field, which leads to employers turning to temporary foreign workers.

Is there an imbalance? Like, are there far more graduates going into a career that already has lots of competition instead of going into careers that are in demand?

I don't know much about this, but if temporary foreign workers really are "stealing" jobs when there are perfectly good citizens willing to work... Then there's a problem.

Your probability is 0. distant places pupils are predicted to bypass domicile as quickly as their study are accomplished. as quickly as at domicile, you could persist with under the experienced worker classification. you will require a activity furnish from a employer who could might desire to tutor to the government that there is not any qualified Canadian to do the interest. With a B.A. in employer, your possibilities of finding artwork as a foreigner are additionally 0. Canada has better than adequate unemployed/underemployed employer graduates. You ask if there are adequate jobs for each physique. the present project is that there are no longer adequate jobs for each guy or woman now. You coming right here and questioning you could stay after your study will in user-friendly terms make issues worse. No offense, yet while your purpose is to bypass the immigration technique then please purely stay the place you're and do your college there. as quickly as you have obtained ''x'' years' adventure then attempt to immigrate to Canada. it particularly is going to nonetheless take some years to do yet that's how that's with each physique.

    In short, greed.

The government should make it that they have to pay TFW double the going salary for it. If hiring a local is better for the company's bottom line, they would never get a TFW again.

I believe the people must be strong and voice their opinion on this. This is totally unacceptable and needs immediate attention for it shall get much worse.

What is the Canadian Government thinking? They put the Canadian worker on Unemployment Benefits and the foreign worker gets that job.

How much is this costing the Government and inturn the average JOE, the tax payer. Shameful.

Steph, in short I do agree with you, and I can tell you it has been raised by our Union to our minister. From my information from colleagues, there is a survey been done now for a possible review of the permit process.

What I have to say to that is, in what century?

Because there are tons of jobs which Canadians won't do (because it is too "lowly" for them or because it is too backbreaking for them - like picking fruits and veggies etc) or because it doesn,t pay enough. Or. Or. Or.
