2007 Civic Hybrid struggling to get 30 mpg?
I have a 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid with 36,000 miles on it. For the first 5 years, in San Diego, I was getting 42 mpg. This past year, in the same city, on the same roads, I've been struggling to get 30 mpg. This happened before and after I got new tires, had them aligned, and balanced, The air pressure in the tires has been checked, I have changed the oil and replaced the air filter. I keep up with the maintenance on my car and no check engine lights are on. I'm taking my car into Honda on Thursday to get the hybrid technology battery checked. What else could be causing this dramatic drop in gas mileage?
I received the software update in 2010. The mileage wasn't affected after the update. It only started acting up July 2012 till now. I've been driving the same as well..

In the past year has the dealer installed the software patch used to offset all of the electrical recalls in that make, model and year of Civic Hybrid?
If yes, that is your problem. In 2010, Honda discovered that there was a major flaw in the hybrid batteries developed for the 2006-2008 Civic Hybrids. Instead of replacing batteries to the tune of $3,000 each while they were still under warranty, they decided to come up with a software patch.
One of the side-effects of this patch is severely less fuel economy.
