A friend died recently on a trip to south Africa What are the policies on sending a body back to the US when?

My friend died in South Africa not long after she arrived and I was wondering about embassy policy on returning a body. How long might it take to get through the red tape? How do they return them, cremated? in a body bag? How expensive might it be to get them home?

Update:

I know I have no say DUH! Just curious is all. I've never even thought of dying while abroad and what pain and suffering it causes. Especially when your healthy. Lesson learned! if your going abroad make sure your family knows when and where you are going and have a living will with contact info in case of emergency!!!!!

The Embassy won't do this - they will assist the family in repatriating the remains. All costs are to be borne by the family and/or insurance. The timing really depends on the country where the death occurred. The Embassy can help reduce some of the foreign red tape. They can also prepare a report of death abroad, which can serve the same function as a death certificate.

If she is cremated there the remains can be mailed home. Creepy but true. The body would have to be embalmed and put in a casket and shipped home by air freight. That would be expensive.
