Why is being fat an insult?

I saw a question about Chris Christie and whether he was the most interesting Republican. Several of the answerers used the fact that he is fat (or the fattest) as a disqualifier and insult. I'm just wondering why a person's weight has anything to do with his worth. I don't care for Christie's politics, but the bashing over his weight stymies me. I'm fat, so I'd like to know.

No one cares if you're a whale or a gnat. Every creature has a right to live.

Well when someone is overweight, it shows that they have little self-control or willpower. It can also be a sign of laziness which isn't a very flattering quality If they had self-control they either wouldn't have let themselves get to such an unhealthy state, or they would be able to start eating better and exercising to become healthier.

That's were the insult comes into play.

I don't however think that being overweight has anything to do with self-worth though. You can still be smart, brave, or a kind person no matter how much you weigh. People shouldn't bash others, they should offer to help them regain their own health.
