Would a car rental company allow you to rent a car from Portland, Maine to get into Canada and back?
Have you done this before or know someone who has? I'm not sure about car rental companies and going into other neighboring countries.

I have rented cars in the US and driven them into Canada, and the reverse. There are definitely companies that allow it, check with the usual suspects, Hertz, Avis, Enterprise, etc. You'll find one.

Usually not because their insurance would not be valid in a foreign country. I live near the southern border and I know you must buy Mexican Auto Insurance and get a visa for your car to operate in Mexico (and for Mexican drivers to operate in the US).
Granted, you could probably dodge this requirement, but the rental agency likely wouldn't let you take the chance.
