Survey...What are some ways to weight train, for a 64 year old lady?

I have lost 150 pounds "gastric bypass"

I do walk a lot! I have a lot of energy!

I would like to start on weights, can you help me decide what to do with them?

Start out light then move up to more as you get used to them. Start with 3 lb, eventually working up to 8. This will not build bulk, just tone and strength. Go on youtube and search "senior fitness" there are a lot of videos to pick from, find the one you like...

A good book to start with is Strong Women Stay Young. There are other books by the same author, I think. A word of caution, though - the program in it recommends ankle weights in addition to hand weights. I found doing the exercises with ankle weights really aggravated my knees and ended up just doing the leg exercises with no weights.

You can also do more weight-bearing exercises without weights or use resistance bands. Think push ups, squats, lunges, jumping jacks.

Listen to your body, start slow and if any weight makes joints ache, back down a notch. You might be able to find weights inexpensively at a thrift store. Some towns have stores that only sell used exercise equipment.

Good to hear that you have a lot of energy at your age! Obviously what you wish to do with weights completely depends on your goals but I'm guessing that you wish to tone your muscles and keep your weight down. You can either do a full body workout where you go to the gym 3 times a week and work you body out as a unit or you go do a split routine where you go to the gym and train different body parts on different days. Which ever fits in better with you. I would advise that you stick around the 12-15 rep range/3 sets and focus on smaller movements as compound movement could be a bit too demanding for your body.

Congrats on having that desire!!! Way to go on the 150 lb fat loss!!

If you don't care to join a gym, consider at-home programs such as Chalean Extreme or P90X (both Beachbody products but you can often find copies on ebay for a decent price)...I've used both and you go at your own pace with regard to how much you choose to lift...I purchased a set of Bowflex SelectTech weights so I've got 1 set of weights that encompasses from 5# to 52.5# each in one set...

Resistance bands are also useful, if you don't have weights (and they travel and pack away easily)...

Start out with low weights, you can find them at your local big box store. Check out a book at your local library. They may have a book for us " over 50's".
