Can anyone help with my British Great Grand Father?
Hello,
First of all sorry for the poor title.
I've doing genealogy for a couple of years know but I have never been able to work on my paternal side in the United Kingdom. So I was wondering if anyone in the UK could help me to find the birth of my Great Grand Father.
It may sound silly but I always been lost with UK archives as to what is charged with a fee, what is free,...Etc because it very different from France where you can ( depending on the region ) work for free almost as far as the records allow you. I already paid two birth records and a military record in the UK for different persons but it was not what I was looking for ( it my fault I know ). I would like someone to either show me what I need if it is free or show me what I need to buy and where. Thank you in advance for reading until here.
My Great - Grand Father Leslie Herbert Aldridge was born around 1914 in Hackney, London ( that is what I know up to now ). Now I believe ( again, not sure at all ) that his father, an Aldridge, was also from the region of London but he married near Bristol. Quickly after the birth of Leslie, the family was back to Bristol where his brother and sister were born after.
Despite having many pictures of Leslie's parents and that dad met them, I have no idea of their names ( except the nickname of Jack ).
Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thank you very much in advance for reading my question.
Greetings from France.
Hello Furious Unicorn, I am sure you have the good guy. In my previous search I thought about Mavis as the mother's maiden name. But I was confused with " Jack " because I found a marriage between an Edward Aldridge and a Beatrice Lavis.
The years you found for the wedding date of Aldridge-Lavis sounds right because my father remember having celebrated their diamond jubilee in the 70s.
About the Beatrice M Lavis. Do you think she is Mabel's sister or is it the same ( Beatrice Mabel Lavis )?
And thank you also for the siblings. Vera and Kenneth are definitely Leslie's brother and sister since I have pictures of them with their names on the back. Though I never heard of Leonard, Donald and Raymond but if I mentioned their names to my great-uncle it could awaken memories. I guess their nicknames could Don, Leo and Ray ?
Again thank you very much, I really appreciate it.
So it is probable that the Edward Aldridge and Beatrice Lavis are not the ones I am looking for.
The other ones though, John and Mabel, seem more likely to be the ones I am looking for. Plus their names are recurrent in my family and I guess that like in France, people tend to name their children after their fathers/grand-father/mothers,...Etc.
My grand-father ( Aldridge-Lavis grand child ) is name John-Frederick which could be like John Aldridge and Frederick Vines ( he could have been like a real father for Mabel and grand-father for Leslie after ). It is too much of a guess though.
But Mabel's date of birth sounds like it could be her. She and John were both around 25 years old at their wedding and with the pictures I have of them for their jubilee they both looked more around their 90s than their 80s ( again, that is a guess ).
I will suggest all these names to my great-uncle, it might help to remember.
Thank you very much for the help. It was hard to know many things a

This looks like the Beatrice that married Edward Edwin Aldridge, his name has been written on the census and then crossed out, presumably he was away at sea, he was in the Royal Navy.
They have been married 3 months with 2 month old baby - quick work :D
The extra Aldridge/Lavis kids (Beatrice M etc) on the index probably belong to them.

Source(s): Age of baptism is different to the marriage cert, but on the original image it looks like a 20 with a line sort of through the zero, so it is a bit ambiguous, so 20 changed to 21 or 26 depending on how you look at it. ----------- Beatrice and Edward not the ones but probably siblings of your couple so don't discard them. Run out of room, so I'll leave you to sort that lot out :)
