how much to take with me for long trip?

Taking a long round trip drive (15 hrs). Staying overnight in hotel/motel. Will spend approximately $300 on gas (roundtrip). How much in cash is safe to bring? Will most likely pay for toll from US to Canada dont know that fare.

Update:

King Solomon,

Are you sure there are $29.00 hotels? In Maine (Portland maybe)? Have not seen those in ages. But I like your answer.

Wow ! This is some puzzle, right ? Long round trip , lets say average highway speed of 60 mph over 15 hours = 900 miles and lets assume the worse , that you are driving a car that achieves 20 mpg so you will need about 45 gallons x an average price today of $ 4 = $ 180 . There are hotels for $ 29 a night and there are some for $ 290 a night . I'm quite sure that a penny pincher would stay at the cheapest . So , lets add up what we have so far $ 290 + $ 29 = $ 319 . These days tolls are pay by plate , they take a picture of your tag and mail you a bill . I suggest you bring $ 500 to be on the safe side and you should really think of securing a credit card soon even if its a debit card .
