Question about a 1999 Yamaha?
Just bought a one and it's a 1600 CC. Is it possible to raise the seat three inches? Is I can, how do it do that?
Thanks, yes he's 6'5 and his feet touch more than enough, still with bended knees. We bought a bike yesterday and it's the biggest one we could find. I'll look into what you have said. No passengers for at least a couple of years! He's got to be more confident first.
No idea what you mean by a French key. This is a new world for us and we're learning as much as possible.
It's from his hip to the ground that's the problem. His legs are long. To operate the brake and the gears is fine. He's stretching out his legs to balance in a stopped position and it looks ridiculous. He needs to just sit up a little higher.

You must be really tall. Most riders love to have both feet flat on the ground for stability, especially when having a passenger. THere are several ways. Purchase a new seat. I am sure there are riser kits as well as lowering kits, that apply to the shock system. Do a search for Motorcycle Parts supply shops such as, JP Cycle, Dennis Kirk, Kuryakin, bikebandit, and many more. THey can help.

Remove the seat and bring it to an upholsterer.
Ask if they will remove the seat cover, add the additional foam you require while keeping the seat contour the same (if so desired) and reupholster.
If you can't locate an upholsterer, ask at an auto body shop for references.

Forward controls will do a much better job if it's a standard or cruiser type of bike .
