One side of my pear tree will not produce, should I crop it off?

Will it ever bear or should I crop it off so the part that does bear will thrive better?

It is possible that they side that does not bear is being pruned wrong. When you prune, be sure to leave the fruit wood. If you prune off the fruit wood, you won't get blossoms or fruit.

Second, it is possible that side of the tree is colder due to breeze or shadow and the blossoms freeze off.

Third, you need to open the center of the tree when you prune so the sun can shine on all sides of the tree. The best shape for a pear tree is funnel shaped with the center of the tree open so the sun can hit the north side of the tree.

I have a couple of ideas.

Is the non producing side close to a paved area?

Is it close to a place that gets treated with herbicides?

Is that side totally in the shade?

Lots of things affect the productivity of a tree and from side to side is not unusual because of the

way the fluids flow through the tree from trunk to branches and leaves.

But there is another idea, it has to do with unusual dormancy, when for some unknown reason a tree does not bare fruit, then you should take a baseball bat (no kidding) and wrap it in something that will protect the tree trunk, and then.....really...... beat the Poo out of the trunk, for some reason that will stimulate production.

So , if all else fails, get out the Louisville slugger, and have at it next spring time.

I'm not actually sure what's wrong with it... but I second the idea about beating up the tree! ;D It sounds dumb, but it can make the tree grow better. I had this old dogwood stump that was supposedly dead for 15 years, I just never bothered removing it. Last summer I tried to rip it out with my hands and really roughed it up but gave up a few minutes into it, a little while later I was walking by and noticed it had little branches popping out from it, I couldn't believe it! :D
