I'm being laid off and I'm 50+ yrs old?

I'm applying for jobs but keep getting rejections. What do I do now?

I'm scared, I will not be able to pay my house payment and a loan payment. Is there any assistance beside unemployment I am eligible for?

I'm so sorry that you're having so much trouble. I've been there and it's VERY scary. But there are things you can do. If you have unemployment income coming in that's a big plus.

But there are things you can do. What really works in the short term is: Borrow money, think about whether there's anything you can sell, negotiate with the lenders and get an attorney to help you if possible. Most cities have legal assistance for low income people. You can apply for rental assistance but if you do that they'll want you to be able to tell them how you expect to be able to pay rent in the future if they help you over the hump. Also apply for rental assistance but be ready to have them balk and try to get out of helping you, even if you qualify for the assistance.

As far as other assistance, maybe but since I don't know your situation so I can't answer that. Are you a veteran? Do you have a disability?

I have read about organizations who help people over 50 job hunt,so that's a possibility. It's not legal for potential employers to ask your age in a job interview. It's not even legal for them to ask in an underhanded way, such as asking what year you graduated from high school.

It is, however your perfect right to trim a few years' experience off of your resume. It's also your right to not tell them what year you graduated from high school or college. It worked for me ;)

Good luck. Be safe. Keep posting to let us know how you're doing.

Keep looking. My sister got hired this year at age 59, and a cousin at age 61, both in fairly high level professional positions, and both after long layoffs.

    Good luck.
