Why do I have Car Clutch Trouble?

My car is a Subaru Impreza, 5 speed manual transmission, 41,000 miles: First thing in the AM, I back out of the driveway with no problem. I put it into first gear and it 'jerks' forward (as if I'm pushing in and out on the clutch VERY quickly. Like a kid learning to drive.) Once in gear it drives fine. Shifting into second and the other gears is nice and smooth. This jerking happens only when I'm letting out the clutch, and only while I'm going into first. Within about 5 - 10 minutes (lots of stop signs and red lights where I drive), it's all better. In the late afternoon after driving it to work, it's fine. Even on the weekends when I don't get into the car until later in the day, it does it - it does it the first time I drive the car any day. Any ideas? It's been this way for a while, but it's getting on my nerves now. (And no, it's not me. I've had many other 4 & 5 speed cars and know how to drive a clutch.)

Update:

It's a 1997 with a 2.2 engine,"L" model. It was off the road for ten years & I put it back on the road a few months ago. But it did it back then too, one of the reasons I took it off the road. What gets me, is if it is some sort of "moisture problem" then why doesn't it do it in reverse while backing out? - Has nothing to do with 'turning' as someone stated.

    What year is your car?

This sounds a little like my 2001 Forester, which had a very touchy clutch when cold, especially on humid days. The problem went away as soon as things warmed up. I attributed it to the clutch facing material absorbing moisture from the air, and learned to live with it.

The problem lasted the life of the clutch, which I just had replaced (at about 200K ! ). (The new clutch is perfect.)

Of course, I could be leading you down the wrong path. Does the Impreza have a hydraulic clutch? Try pumping it 10 times before starting off. If that makes a difference, maybe you've got air in the line, or perhaps another kind of hydraulic problem.

on the nose cone of the trans around the input shaft is a surface that the through out bearing slides on if that is dry it may not slide smoothly it will hang up and then release all at once making you appear to be a first time manual shifter

Does it only happen when turning sharply? If so it could be the transfer clutch is worn out.
