Which is better volunteering for an hour or donating $15?

Also what dollar amount would the tipping point ?

I'm curious to see if any patterns emerge here based on gender.

Update:

Oh, I meant better in terms of effectiveness, not personal satisfaction.

In my opinion, since an average person doesn't do the 15$ equivalent in terms of amount of work done, in a vast majority of cases just donating is better, provided you're donating to a legitimate organization that uses the resources they collect efficiently. Far to many people have the attitude that just being there is enough, with their priorities scr*wed up - being there mainly for the personal fulfillment.

If you're going to invest yourself 100% then you're almost certainly going to do a lot work, no matter the skills you posses, in which case volunteering is better.

That would vary with each organization and it would depend on the organization- and how effectively are they using their donation dollars?

Volunteering --has more of a guarantee...you know how the time is being used.

I would volunteer, nobody touching my money. I would be able to donate objects and food not money, money. I don't trust it. I have given homeless people money in the past and found out they spent it on a big bottle of booze. Some donating companies are scams.

Be careful if donate, where is the money going? Is it really getting to the person who needs it or is it going into someones pocket. As for volunteering, I wouldn't, if you give you should be able to have a deduction, and you cannot deduct time, only money.

I would rather donate but if i had a choice i wouldn't even donate since the money just ends up in the pockets of corrupt people.

There's no absolute answer to that. It all depends on how the value of your volunteerism compares to $15. That depends on both how you value your time and how the organization values your time. In some cases, your time and skill set may be worthless to them - they may need money. At other times, your labor might be worth more than $15.

    Donating.

That way there is a bigger budget for bene's of the CEO, President and Board of Directors...

I prefer volunteering because then I will know if they are actually receiving the benefits.

I think volunteering is better - you feel like you make a real personal contribution. I do both.
