help! what should i do for my dog's stinky breath?!?

my dog, biggins, is a mini schnauzer with the most horrible breath imaginable. i give him special treats and bones designed to scrape off plague and bacteria, which helped a bit for a while. i also put a liquid breath freshener (for dogs) into his drinking water, which doesn't really help. the freshener enhances the stink and adds a strange mint smell to it. his teeth are in perfect condition, so i'm thinking maybe his food has something to do with it. i feed him beneful dry food (and one wet food can of beneful once a week) and his breath just smells so horrible, especially after he eats.

so, what should i do?! i've been considering getting him doggy tooth paste and a little finger brush (he is very good with people touching his mouth/teeth, so it would be easy) but i'm just not sure because i don't know if it really makes a difference.

any suggestions? i mean it doesn't seem like he has any kind of infection to cause this, he is in no pain. so i'm pretty lost!

Update:

he has been to the vet a few times this year, he has no health issues like that. it's probably his food.

Update 2:

thank you for everyone's input, but i was talking to my mother about it and we have come to the conclusion that it's simply his food. we switched him to beneful's "healthy diet" instead of the original, and ever since he has had bad breath. we are going to switch him to a different brand all together.

There are few dog foods of worse quality than Beneful. Put your dog onto a better quality diet.

Take him to the vet. It needs to be established whether the dog has an intestinal issue or a dental problem. Clearly, you think it's a dental problem or you would not be considering tooth paste and a finger brush.

This is not going to go away on its own and there is nothing you can do at home, he needs a vet examination.

When was the last time you took Biggins to the vet for a Dental? You need to have his teeth cleaned at least twice a year by a vet to remove all the plaque and get rid of the bacteria. Store bought breath fresheners will do nothing, treats and bones won't do near enough. The smell coming from your dogs mouth could be caused by many things. He could have a Rotting tooth, an Infection and a bad odor from the mouth can also mean Liver and or Kidney Disease. You need to take your dog to the vet. The sooner you do it the better. If his breath smells that bad, he has an Infection and the Infection spreads and hits his bloodstream, he will become Septic and you can lose him. Part of the smell can also be coming from the Beneful you are feeding him. It's one of the worse and unhealthiest foods on the market. The ingredients that go into Commercial Dog Food like Beneful, Purina, Pedigree, Mighty Dog, Alpo, Iam's, Kibbles and bits and any dog food they sell in grocery stores or stores like Walmart, Walgreens, K-Mart. It you knew what ingredients are used to make foods like Beneful, it would disgust you and you would not longer want to feed it to your dog. I call commercial food Road Kill, which is exactly what it is. This is very detailed information about how they make commercial dog foods.

Take your dog to the vet and have his mouth checked out, before the situation gets any worse.

Source(s): You and your mom are making a serious mistake by not taking your dog to the vet. You are putting your dogs life at risk. You are not vets, so you can't come to a conclusion on anything. The food you are feeding is still garbage. If your dog does have a problem with his mouth (teeth and gums) or has an Internal problem, without a vets care, your dogs health can become life threatening and he can die if it gets severe enough. Switching foods constantly, will only mess up your dogs digestive system and cause more problems. The problem your dog has is a lot more serious than just the food. Neither you or your mom understand how serious this can become. Either be responsible and get him to a vet or risk his life and losing him. It sounds like you don't care about his health. I feel sorry for your poor dog having to be the one who pays and suffers in pain, just because of his irresponsible and neglectful owners.

Since you said the vet has cleared him of medical and dental problems the usually cause bad breath, I'm guessing it is the VERY poor quality food you are giving him. I'm not trying to be critical, you probably just didn't know it was bad as most people ar not aware of these things. Go to dogfoodanalysis.com to see what would be better choices. You don't want to give him anything rated less than four stars. Were I you, I would start with a change in diet and brushing his teeth daily. If that doesn't help after about a month, talk to the vet again.

Brushing is the best thing for the dog. You need special toothpaste, avail in all pet stores. Start out by letting the dog taste/eat some from your finger. Your dog will give you a hard time at first. Do the best you can, try the front teeth to start.

    good luck

Well, this is a problem among many dog-owners. My aunt's dog had the same problem. I would recommend treats that freshen up the dog's mouth, and if that doesn't work, you might consider a vet chech-up. Don't worry, it's probably nothing dangerous, just unpleasant.
