You need a permit including a certificate showing you went to the firing range and actually learned to shoot a hand gun and could fairly consistently hit the target before you can even PURCHASE a hand gun in CA.

There is an "armed security guard permit" which requires a class and additional firing range training with the specific caliber of handgun covered by your license.
