Theory question-- guitar chords.?

Say I'm playing a song for a singer in key of C. The singer wants to go lower... what keys are lower? I can transpose with no problem, but don't understand the range. Is A the lowest? Some people say there is no lowest or highest, but they don't explain. But then I have read where hymns are usually in G or D, Why? Are these in the middle?

I know to go higher you can use a capo. If I were in C and added capo to 2nd, I'd be in D if I used same fingerings. That is not what I want to know.

Update:

If I play guitar, and strum chords, is one key higher or lower than another and why.

they key of a song doesn't determine how high or low a song is, all it tells you is what notes you will be using. when a person has a particular range they can sing in, it will lend itself to a particular key.

if the singer wants to sing higher or lower, well, how by much? If the singer wants to sing an octave lower, you don't have to change keys at all. if the singer wants to sing a 4th lower than what you're doing in C, then you would be in the key of G, and music-theory wise, it's the same as if the singer wanted to sing a 5th higher instead. that's why there's not really a "highest" or "lowest" key, just a persons range, and what key it happens to fit in with.

    i hope that helps.
