Let's say more a moment that the U.S. bombs Syria ... what then ?
Ignore if you will the arguement about who did or didn't use chemical weapons ... there is no doubt what so ever that Syria has a stockpile of them ... also there is no doubt what so ever that the "rebels" (I use that term loosely because in this civil war there are a lot of dodgy participants - including some not so western friendly Islamist groups) ...
So my question is ... should the U.S. and others bomb the syrian regime into submission what then ?
What stops some of the more unsavory opposition types getting their hands on these stockpiles of chemical weapons (and I'm not just talking about Sarin) ? - has anyone seen any of mention this since the "red-line" was crossed ?
Please note : I am not condoning intervention, nor am I saying intervention is necessarily bad thing ... the devil as always is in the when how, why, what and who ...
What's the plan here ... failed policies in Afghanistan against the Russians resulted in a power vacuum that let extremists mount attacks ... failed policies in Iraq/Iran War with full western support of chemical weapons attacks against the Iranians...
Later under false WMD claims the "Collation of the Willing" has reduced Iraq into a permanent war-zone and killing field where extremists elements are gaining ground daily (with around 804 people killed in sectarian violence for the month of August, down a little from July's high of 1057)
If these people want to play being war-mongers at least they could be professional about it FFS. (instead of lighting fires then pretending to put them out as well)
So what's the plan ... bomb them and keep your fingers crossed ?
Don't do anything and let hundreds of thousands get slaughtered and millions displaced ?
Admittedly security and intelligent services across the globe will win bigger budgets and be granted extra powers either way ... self fulfilling prophecy anybody ?
LOS POLLOS HERMANOS - what you said about the al-Nusrat Front is true- they are a small number compared to the Free Syrian Army ... some of those Generals that defected though are hardly upstanding people ... but the point you raise is valid ...
I'm just trying to work out how one stops this spreading beyond the Syrian Border in the coming months or years ...
rainbow - that's probably the best advice I've ever been given :)

This is pretty much where I'm at. A strike or war is likely to cause nothing but destruction and death, doing nothing is likely to allow the same destruction and death. Two bad choices, both ways thousand die. I'd like to see the UN come out with some reconstruction plan like we used to do post WW2 (for Iraq and Afghanistan also) but that doesn't seem likely. It's a clusterfvck.

Me personally, I think its stupid!!! It's their war let them deal with it! We have enough problems here in America but yet we're still in the Middle East as it is! We just can't keep our noses out of other people's business, which therefore causes more problems for us. I know for a fact that if we declare war on Syria then it will be WWIII for damn sure, not a doubt about it!

And at the end of the day, neither you, me, nor 99.999% of the human populace really have any idea what's really going on. I am very impressed with your summary and I see you share my frustration and fatigue, and disappointment with humans in general. One can wish and hope for the best til your blue in the face and yet, at any minute, it all goes up in smoke so rapidly. And then the daily body count becomes about as compelling as noon news in central Kansas. After Viet Nam wound down, I sincerely hoped that was that. Hmm! No such luck. Anyway, lets cross our fingers and pay closer attention to our lives and those around us.

The unsavoury group al-Qaeda affiliate is called al-Nusrat Front. It is one of the smallest groups in the conflict. The largest rebel group by far is the Free Syrian Army, which is primarily made up of army deserters. The idea that most of the rebels are al-Qaeda terrorists is propaganda promoted by the Assad regime.
It's an unpopular position, but I support an attack on the Assad regime who has shown itself to be absolutely horrific. Most people are against interventionism, but I think if there is a way to weaken evil murderous dictators without putting our own troops in harm's way, then we should do it.

If you want to understand the only chance for resolving this conflict without starting a USA vs Iran war, read this informative article (2nd link below), just published, which argues why US military intervention in Syria is wrong but also why the President has a rare, diplomatic opportunity to show us all how the artless pragmatism of war can be replaced by the diplomacy of wisdom. (The Comments area for this article is open.)

What happens. Two years later, terrorists do something to pay us back and we won't admit that it is self-defense. An eye for an eye makes both people blind.

It stops when we install a US-controlled puppet - who will get thrown out in 2 decades by fundamentalist Muslims...

1)Zionists want WW3 in order to make Billy from Saw movie one world leader aka antichrist.
2)Assad did NOT use chemical weapons.
3)The rebels (paid by Zionist masons) did use them weapons.
