How did they get the answer of 6?

If 5/8 = 3/x and y = 1/5, what is the value of x + 6y?

    From the first equation you can calculate the value of x:

    (Do you know cross-multiplication?)

    x = (8*3)/5.

    From the second equation: y = 1/5.

    Therefore the quantity x+6y = (8*3)/5 + 6*1/5 = 6

    x = 24/5

    y = 1/5

    x + 6y = 24/5 + 6/5 = 30/5 = 6

    (1)

    5 / 8 = 3 / x

    cross-multiply (outer with outer, inner with inner numbers)

    5x = 24

    divide both sides by 5

    x = 24/5

    (2)

    y = 1/5

    x + 6y .................... plug in the value of x from (1)

    = 24/5 + 6(1/5)

    = 24/5 + 6/5

    = 30/5

    = 6

    solve for x in first equation

    x=24/5

    plug both x and y into last equation

    24/5+6/5=30/5=6
