why must you "flash" an ECM?
ones at parts store are almost $500 and need to be flashed because they are not programmed or something. If I get one at a salvage yard for my exact model of a car does it still have to be programmed?

Flashing is talking about the engine control program which the computer uses to control the car. Without being flashed its like having a computer without Windows installed.
If you get a ECM from the exact same car (same engine and transmission is the major things) then no you wont need to get it flashed.
