Governor Stafford of California representing the Central Pacific Railroad, missed on his first try.....gave it a tap on his second try....The Vice President of the Union Pacific, T.C. .Durant drove the second spike
Three spikes were donated....one gold by California; One Iron by Arizona; One silver by Utah. The last tie was California laurel

The Last Spike (The Golden Spike) was driven in Promontory, Utah on May 10th,1869, by the Hon Leland Stanford..

Jesse James. He robbed the Glendale train that was delivering the Golden Spike.
An iron one was quickly painted gold but nobody wanted to take part in a farce and the two lines were left separate so they built a town around it and they called it Mobile.

That's an interesting question, but had he been alive, Abe Lincoln should have had that honor. It was his foresight (and treasury) That ( plus some speculators) made it possible to go from Omaha to San Francisco in six days instead of 3 months.
