with ever increasing fuel costs would hybrid type cargo ships with sails be viable?

The wind is a free and a clipper type vessel is quite fast with decent wind speeds so on non- perishable goods could they see a comeback if used with a auxiliary engine?

As hornchurch male says, there is already a ship with sails saving 15% of fuel costs. When a wingsail was tried out earlier on MV Ashington http://www.maritimejournal.com/__data/assets/image... it nt only saved 15% fuel, it also allowed docking without using a tug, which saved the same amount of money again.

there is already a powered vessel carrying cargo using sails controlled by computer . they fold away by robotic means when in port to allow loading etc.

cuts fuel costs by around 15% at moment . as fuel costs and emission controls threaten to push shipping costs higher. sails will be a viable option.

Wind may be free but it is unpredictable. No wind, no go. I expect they will use nuclear propulsion soon.
