  • Is Virgin Atlantic's new scheme to train-up new pilots with little or no experience any different than up-front payment schemes?

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/travelnews/11196...

This has been highly publicised in the UK media as "free training" with a job at the end.If it is a genuine offer I'm applying, however it's difficult to ascertain if it is what it says on the tin?or just another way to get hopefuls to part with their cash.

  • Should ballistic recovery airframe parachutes be "phased in" for single engine aircraft that operate night or IFR over rugged terrain?

Although as pilots we are trained to do a forced landing in the event of engine failure and this IS the best option if you are visual for example with an empty field with adequate room for landing.

If over rough terrain,or a heavy built-up area in the case of landing or take off(at other times you should be able to glide clear of a built-up area by the regulations) in night and/or IFR wouldn't if be better to deploy an airframe chute (like on the Cirrus SR22 and some other models) and hope for the best?

  • How do you produce methanol from either grass cuttings or other plant cuttings?

I make bio-diesel from vegetable oil and use methanol in the process.I currently buy the methanol ,but I can get a lot of grass cuttings from my friend who is a gardner.I've heard there is a way to ferment the cellulose in grass into wood alchohol(methanol),but I'm not sure of the technique or how productive it is.Does anbody know the process/technique? Thanks in advance.

  • Lower jaw tooth extractions for braces?

Hello.I've been told I may need surgery on my upper jaw to expand it in order to create a better bite(I'm 33 by the way),my upper canines were removed when I was 13 instead of braces and this has lead to multiple problems. My current orthodontist says that the best solution is to expand my upper jaw surgically and make my lower jaw smaller by extracting two teeth then applying braces. Is anyone on here a dentist/orthodontist who can give general advice as to whether this probably the best option(I know you can't be 100% without seeing the inside of my mouth) but just to get some idea.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Any advice on a good choice of headset to purchase?

I'm going to purchase my own headset because the ones I borrow at the club can sometimes be unreliable but also for hygiene purposes.I'm looking to budget around £200(roughly $250 USD) to buy a decent long lasting headset.I've looked on many websites and there is a lot of choice so you need to know what you are buying,I understand the ANR ones seem to cost a lot more.On my budget I've had a look at the David Clarke 13.4,and the Sennheiser 13.04.But if any experienced pilots out there have any good advice on which to choose it would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  • I myself AM NOT a fan of FSX,but if it's of no benefit at all why would the MH370 capt have one at home?

I don't put much faith in home flight "simulators"(I use that term very loosely and prefer to call them "games"),I can say there is very little similarity between flying a light single in real life and replicating the same exercise in the same aircraft on flight simulator, because I can and do fly light singles and have played FSX so can give a fair comparison.

I'm almost certain someone with little or no flying experience would teach themselves bad habits if attempting to teach themselves using FSX.

But I saw that the MH370 777-200capt had a flight simulator set up at home, even though he flys real 777-200s for a living and will no doubt get proper practice on motion enabled category D type simulators at work.

So my question is whether a home flight simulator is of use for practicing or learning new skills on larger type aircraft? I cannot say whether it is "realistic" with regards to flying airliners because like I have said I have only flown light singles as PIC,and had a non-official "play about" in a DA42NG using symmetrical power settings in a friends aircraft.

  • Does anybody know(or where I can find out)if a alot of ex WW2 bomber pilots became airline pilots?

Did a lot of these guys go on to be the first generation of jet and turboprop airline pilots,or did most just go back to their "regular job" after the war.If there were any most would have retired in the late seventies/early eighties I would imagine. Also would the transition from a WW2 heavy bomber like a B17,Lancaster,Halifax,B29....ect,to a first generation jet airliner or perhaps even a modern jet airliner(glass cockpit) be easier than a fresh CPL/IR with 250 hoursTT,who's perhaps only flown nothing bigger and more complex than a Piper Seneca ?

  • How did Frank Abengale manage to fool Pan AM into thinking he was a pilot for such a long time?

I'm a private pilot and i'm pretty sure I couldn't bullshxt my way into the flight deck of an airliner. So assuming the film "catch me if you can" is an accurate portrayal how did Abengale manage it without been a pilot of any kind(other than a fake one).

  • Rough estimate for public liability insurance?

Hello if any of you can help me I'm seeking a rough idea of how much public liability insurance is likely to cost for 2 entirely separate business proposals.

1)Selling aerial photographs on a market stall of that city(in northern England).Trading regular hours.

2)Running a catering trailer in a town or city centre again working daytime hours.

I know nobody can give an exact cost but a rough idea would be appreciated as on comparison sites I have to enter virtually all my details.Thanks.

  • Whats the best way of legally protecting and making money from your songs?

Hello I'm a truck driver and also a pilot. In my spare time I've wrote some songs over the years.I have no intention of doing singing myself as I'm not in the right age bracket now to get to any "serious level".So my intensions are to write for other people, and compared to the modern day (past 10 years or so) crap I'd say my songs are pretty good.

Whats the best way of releasing them to market, copywritting, and keeping royalties from the artists who sing my songs?

    Thanks people.

  • with ever increasing fuel costs would hybrid type cargo ships with sails be viable?

The wind is a free and a clipper type vessel is quite fast with decent wind speeds so on non- perishable goods could they see a comeback if used with a auxiliary engine?

  • Are there too many "jacket fillers" working as bouncers and police officers?

I went to a bar last weekend and some of the doorstaff(bouncers) and the police outside the venue(town centre Saturday night) were like only 5ft'5" tall and maybe 10 or 11 stone. No way can these people be competent at their job.Surely in a role like this size and muscle matters theres no way round it?

  • Ethiopian airlines 787 catches fire at LHR.Is this aircraft an epic fail or a rushed project?

It's had more teething problems than anyone can think of,and surely they can't continue to call it a "Dreamliner"?

  • How come girls/women like hot guys hitting on them even if they are known "players".?

Yet if an average/ugly guy hits on them who isn't banging half the town(unlike Mr Hot) they are a "creep"?

And then women expect sympathy when they get messed around(hot guy bangs her a few times then gets rid of her)like they didn't see it coming.
