When I sing on my PC and hold long notes, the vocals fade out during playback. Why?

I sing on karaoke sites across the internet, and also locally on my PC. I have tried various microphones and it doesn't matter which brand I use, I have this issue. When I hold a note out long, the vocals fade out while recording. When I play it back it sounds like the mic is cutting it out somehow. I use handhelds now, and I used to use a headset mic, but no matter what I have tried, I can't get it to not fade out.

Anyone have any thought/ideas on how to fix this issue?

All I can tell you, is that it might be the Windows "Automatic Gain Control" function. Turn that off. It's somewhere in your audio settings control panel. If not there, then it could be in the control panel for your particular sound card (like if it's a Creative Live soundblaster or similar, Creative might have its own settings/mixer software).
